Worldwide October Events

The Autumn leaves are falling and October is already here and there are a variety of events happening all over the world, including the Beijing International Music Festival, which includes a variety of musical and drama acts.

The Annual Kerry Film Festival in Ireland, which screens over 100 films during the week-long event. Louisiana hosts it’s oldest festival, the International Rice Festival.

Buenos Aires Spring Wine Tour on the third Fridays in October and November.

In London, the Royal Albert Hall will host the International Ballroom Dancing Championships 2012, where the best dance talent in England will compete.

The Royal Horticultural Society's annual autumn flower show is also taking place at the Society's Halls in London and features the autumn fruit and vegetable competition, ornamental plant competition, botanical art and photography.

Trieste's Barcolana has the largest sailing race in Europe, which is an extraordinary spectacle that sees families and professional teams battling it out in old hulls and hi-tech boats.

In Lourdes the National Pilgrimage of St Rosiare is celebrated with a special mass, held in the holy sanctuary of Notre-Dame du Rosaire.

Beijing International Music Festival

There are a number of different activities in the Beijing International Music Festival including a symphony concert, opera, solo concert, chamber music concert, jazz music concert, song and dance drama, vocal concert and other fine art performances.

This is a nationally worldwide recognised and respected event and is renowned for displaying music with internationally significant effect. A lot of world famous singers and art performers alike attend the event each year. It is the ideal event for people who enjoy good music.

Kerry Film Festival

The annual Kerry Film Festival screens over 100 films during the week-long event. Taking place in various venues in and around Tralee in County Kerry ranging from an old barn to city cinemas, a great atmosphere prevails and there is plenty of additional entertainment laid on for the many international guests and filmmakers that attend.

Films are submitted in six categories: Best Experimental, Best International, Best Animation, Best Documentary, Best Irish and Best Director. There are also a number of workshops throughout the week that are open to all ages. The prestigious festival culminates in a prize-giving ceremony on the final day for the award-winning films.

One of Louisiana's oldest festivals, the International Rice Festival attracts 150,000 people to the town of Crowley annually. Special events include a livestock show, rice cooking, eating and grading contests and two parades, including a procession of antique farm equipment.

Other events include a Farmers' Banquet and Queens Ball, French accordion, fiddle and harmonica contests and frog jumping. Since the inauguration of the festival in 1937, it has been visited by over seven million people.

On the third Friday in September, October and November, browse the fashion boutiques along Armenia and Honduras streets in Palermo Viejo while sipping the nominated wine of the night. Each boutique at Spring Wine Tour Urbano represents a national winery.

Malbec, Argentina pride and glory vine, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and white and sparkling wines each have a turn. Its sister event, San Telmo's Autumn Wine Tour Urbano in March, April and May, is a great success.

Royal Albert Hall International Ballroom Dancing Championships

Amateur and professional dancers dramatically splay their legs, strut and swirl in streamline suits and sexy sequined dresses at the annual International Ballroom Dancing Championships. The best dance talent in the country compete at The Royal Albert Hall.
Known as the Elsa Wells Championships to aficionados, around 360 of the world's foremost amateur and professional exponents of competitive Dance Sport compete for the International Standard and Latin titles.

RHS London Autumn Harvest Show

The Royal Horticultural Society's annual autumn flower show, held at the Society's Halls in London, features the autumn fruit and vegetable competition, ornamental plant competition, botanical art and photography.

Experts are available to discuss horticultural techniques and the most appropriate autumn bulbs to use in every setting. Many plants are available to buy. Competitions are open to all.

Barcolana


Where? Trieste, Italy
When? 6th - 14th October 2012

Trieste's Barcolana is an extraordinary spectacle that sees families and professional teams battling it out in old hulls and hi-tech boats. It is now the largest sailing race in Europe and takes place on the last day of a nine-day festival.

Started in 1969 with no more than 50 boats, today more than 2000 vessels participate in the race, also called Coppa d'Autunno. It is named after the Societa Velica di Barcola e Grignano, the sailing club which still manages the competition.

National Pilgrimage of St Rosaire

St Rosaire is celebrated every year in Lourdes with a dedicated pilgrimage and a special mass, held in the holy sanctuary of Notre-Dame du Rosaire. In 1571 Christian troops provided by the Vatican, Spain, Venice and Savoy overcame a Turkish armada in the entrance to the Corinth gulf.

The Pope at the time, Grégoire XIII, attributed this victory to the daily processions of St Rosaire brotherhoods in the streets of Rome. He promptly changed his planned Victory Day to St Rosaire day, to be celebrated on 7 October.

World Food Day

World Food Day is celebrated on 16 October and this year's theme is “Agricultural Cooperatives - key to feeding the world” which has been chosen to highlight the role that cooperatives actually play in improving the security of food and helping towards the eradication of hunger worldwide.

The interest in cooperatives is also evident in the UN General Assembly’s decision to designate the year 2012 “International year of Cooperatives”.
