Seasons Greetings & Welcome to the Wet Age of Aquarius

December the 21st, 2012 marked the end of the Mayan Calender, which many believed signaled the end of the world but we're still here obviously and in reality nothing particularly out of the ordinary occurred. Another theory however, is that this event symbolizes the dawning of the Age of Aquarius.  With more than 600 flood alerts and warnings, and the inevitable disruption in holiday travel plans for thousands of people, it seems rather ironic that Aquarius is the Water Bearer.

On that note, Perpetual Traveller would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and hope that you are safe and dry at home or have managed to make your getaway just in time for the holidays.

Global Hotel prices rises in 2012

According to a recent survey conducted by Hotels.com called the Hotel Price Index (HPI), overall the global hospitality sector seems to be recovering with a 4% increase in the first half of 2012. The bad news for Hoteliers is however that average prices remain at 2005 levels.

This is the first time in 5 years that travellers have paid more for their hotel rooms during the first 6 months of the year in all areas of the world. The global 4% rise, compared to the same period the year before, demonstrated that the economic recovery in the hotel industry was well-established.

The HPI only considers prices that people paid for their hotel nights. More specifically here below are some of the results...
  • Pacific rates up 6%
  • North America up 5%
  • Asia up 4%
  • Latin America up 1%
  • Europe up 1%
  • Middle East up 1%.
David Roche, President, Hotels.com, said: “The hotel industry bounced back in the first half of this year from a number of natural and political crises in 2011 and it is encouraging to see growth in the sector. While initially it may not seem good news for consumers, hotel prices are still only around their 2005 level, representing great value for travellers when both wages and other prices have risen considerably.”

The most significant reasons for the rise are:
  1. The Pacific saw resources boom in Australia causing space to be at a premium, most significantly in Western Australia.
  2. Improved business travel in synergy with higher consumer spending allowed hotels to be busier (less need for discounting) in the US
  3. Recovery from japanese Earthquake: The Japanese began to travel again following the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster of March 2011.
  4. A notable increase in Chinese international travellers boosted Hotel rates higher and enabled expansion in Asia concerning low cost carriers (example: Peach Aviation & Scoot).
  5. Recovery from Arab Spring: Confidence returned to the Middle East and North Africa in general and hotel which positively impacted on Hotel prices.
Even though Hotel rates increased overall in Europe, the results presented mixed fortunes. Falling consumer confidence and lower spending power were the main reasons.

The French Government target foreign owners of holiday homes with a draconian Tax grab

Owners of holiday homes in France are set to be targeted with punitive Tax rises announced by Francois Hollande, leader of the new Socialist Government, as they seek to tax so called wealthy foreigners that supported France in the past, in order to reduce France's significant budget deficit.
According to the plans Tax rises will affect foreign-owned second homes in the following areas...
  • Tax on rental income is set to rise from 20% to 35.5%.
  • Capital gains tax on property sales is set to rise from 19% to 34.5%.
What is even worse is that the Tax rise on rental income will be retrospective as from the 1st of January 2012. The increase in capital gains Tax will be applicable as from the end of JUly 2012, which means in reality that property owners will have precious little time to react by selling their homes.

Foreign holiday home owners already pay 2 other notable Taxes to the French Government called the “Taxe Fonciere” (paid by the house owner) and the “Taxe d'habitation”, (paid by those who live in it).

If this new Tax law is introduced, the rate of French capital gains Tax will be practically double for EU residents on their French property capital gains. Just another pleasure for living in euro-zone. Any country that enjoys a double taxation system can deduct any Tax paid at source in France on French gains from the Tax on the same gains of their own country. However, if the French Tax is higher, no rebate will be due.

The French finance ministry indicated that the new rule would affect approximately 60,000 rental properties in France the owners of which made an average profit of €10,000, equal to a total of €50 million income for the French revenue this year and €250 million in 2013. This is on paper at least, but in reality people will likely vote with their feet if not in the short term the medium term. Who will want to invest in France now?

These short term thinking Tax plans will effectively attempt to penalise people for choosing France as a country to invest in and spend money on holiday, all in the cause of a so called "social charge", which sounds noble, but is likely to do long term damage. What the French Government do not calculate is the massive potential loss to Tourism and future property sales, as the message is clear “Do not invest in France or we will bleed you dry”.

The country most affected by these measures is the UK, whereby approximately 200,000 British people own second homes, many of which travel using budget airlines. The British treasury recently stated "We will need to study the details. But we will of course challenge any proposal which breaches European single market laws and anti-discrimination rules.".

Europe is becoming an over-taxed, over-regulated and more uncomfortable (by the day) place to live at present and France has just placed itself towards the top of the list of destinations not to live or invest in.

Top Worldwide Events in December 2012

Finally December 2012 is here. Its been talked about and predicted for thousands of years, with a multitude of theories and outcomes both good and bad. More specifically, it is on the 21st of December 2012 at precisely 11:11 am, the earth will be in the exact alignment with the sun and the center of the our galaxy known as the 'Milky Way'. This is a extremely rare astrological event that occurs only once every 26,000 years. Yet, as spectacular as is it, this is only part of the equation, as the earth will also experience what is known as the "Precession of the Equinoxes" by the same date. This is another event that occurs only once every 26,000 years. For more information read this article: What is 2012 all about?

Here are some more facts about December:
  1. The name December comes from the Latin decem for “ten”, as it was the 10th month in the Roman Calendar

  3. The term Yuletide (’yule monath’) comes from a Norse tradition of cutting and burning a huge tree on December 21st. It was supposed to symbolize the winter solstice, bring good luck and burn throughout the 12 day winter festival, known later as the 12 days of Christmas.
  4. Saint Nicholas, who would become Santa Claus, was originally designated (by the church) as the patron saint of children , thieves and pawnbrokers. December 6th is designated St. Nicholas Day.
  5. December 28th is regarded by many superstitious people as the most unlucky day of the year
  6. The first human heart transplant was performed by Dr. Christian Barnard on December 3rd, 1967 in South Africa.
  7. Snow on Christmas means Easter will be warm and green is an almanac prediction
  8. Many people believe wearing new shoes on Christmas day will bring a person bad luck

Precession of the Equinoxes

Many people associate the 2012 subject with the somewhat dark theory that the Mayan long calendar marks the end of the world by December 21, 2012 through a doomsday or apocalypse circumstance. To survive the coming changes that 2012 will bring about, this kind of doom and gloom belief is precisely the kind of thinking you need to avoid at all costs.

Other people philosophize that 2012 may well bring the 'end of days' however in synergy, as a race we will witness the beginning of what is termed the 'Golden Age' and an astronomical terms the Age of Aquarius.

Moreover, by 2012, many theorize that we may well experience a return of Planet X otherwise known as 'Nibiru' and as such they are seeking to a subsequent means to survive 2012. Additionally, there are those who believe absolutely nothing will occur by December 21, 2012. Who is right?

The concert will held be at WhereHaus 612 in Nicosia and will see Trio Tekke performing songs from their albums as well as new unreleased songs, and will be followed by a party with the DJs Koulla P. Katsikoronou, Lefto and S.S Karamazov. Trio Tekke consists of Antonis Antoniou (voice, tzouras), Lefteris Moumtzis (voice, guitar) and Colin Somervell (double bass).
