Afghanistan: Passenger Plane Crashes in Afghanistan

May 17, 2010 — An Afghanistan Interior Ministry spokesman said that a passenger plane en route from Kunduz to Kabul was carrying 44 people when it crashed Monday near the country's Salang Pass. According to various reports, there is no word yet about casualties.

Canada: Fighter Jets Escort Cathay Pacific Flight to Vancouver

May 16, 2010 — Some type of threat prompted NORAD to scramble two fighter jets to escort a Cathay Pacific flight arriving at Vancouver International Airport from Hong Kong on Saturday (5/15). The Canadian authorities have not provide much information about the threat yet, other than the Royal Canadian Mounted Police being quoted saying it was a bomb threat.

Egypt: Man with Weapons in Bags Detained at Cairo Airport

May 12, 2010 — Egyptian authorities arrested an American-Egyptian at the Cairo Airport early Wednesday after he was found to have two 9mm handguns, ammunition, swords and knives in his luggage. The suspect, identified as Mohammed Ibrahim Khalf, arrived on a flight from New York's JFK International Airport.

DHS Working on New Video Camera that "Sees It All"

May 7, 2010 — The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is touting a new video surveillance camera technology called Imaging System for Immersive Surveillance (ISIS), which allows for un-distorted, 360 degree very high-resolution footage to be captured. DHS's Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) developed ISIS using technology previously pioneered at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory for military applications. ISIS is being piloted at Boston's Logan International Airport.
