Australian Airport TeraHertz Scanner Trials

Australia’s busiest and second-busiest airports are putting new passenger-scanning technology through its paces.

Produced by Thru Vision Systems, the TS4 device under trial at both Sydney and Melbourne airports is 100 per cent radiation free. It’s essentially a magnet for Tera-Hertz energy emitted by both passengers and the objects they carry and, by detecting it, can highlight the presence of potentially harmful materials, including liquid explosives.

While controversial millimeter wave and back-scatter x-ray technologies have been deployed across the US airport scene en masse, they haven’t yet been adopted in Australia on a widespread basis. The country is set to put a handful into service, but they’ll only be used in extreme circumstances.

Compared to these machines, Thru-vision's  TS4 scanner – as now being used in the Australian trials - could offer airports several advantages. For one thing, it doesn’t require passengers to stand still while a check’s being performed. Rather, it analyses them while they’re in motion and this aspect could realistically reduce passenger waiting times and speed up the whole process from initial airport entrance to the point aircraft leave the runway.

The TS4 passenger scanner can also handle multiple subjects at one time while, cost-wise, it’s reported to be in the region of 50 per cent cheaper than other airport scanning designs.

Additionally, it has size and weight on its side and doesn’t necessarily have to be placed at ground level: the option’s there to wall or ceiling-mount it, if required. Probably the most controversial aspect of the full-body scanners in use at airports both in the US and beyond is the degree to which they capture the human body in detail, prompting many to complain on privacy grounds. It’s important to realize that the TS4 doesn’t obtain individual body images in the same way, but rather, their energy.

‘Terahertz waves occupy part of the electromagnetic spectrum between radio waves and infra-red”, Thru-vision explained in a press release on the TS4 airport passenger scanner issued in 2010, adding these waves are ‘...naturally produced all of the time by all objects and people.

‘Thru-vision Systems’ products only receive, they do not transmit. Thru-vision Systems’ products do not illuminate people with any radiation such as X-rays or millimeter wave microwaves. The products provide imaging solutions for real time use on people either close-by or at distance, indoors and out.’

Solar Airport Building Sets European Carbon First

A British airport has set what's thought to be a European precedent with the completion of a new structure that ultimately releases no emissions into the atmosphere.

By drawing on renewable energy technologies, including solar (photovoltaic) cells on its roof, Bournemouth Airport's arrivals hall is considered the first true carbon neutral airport structure to go into operation in any of the Eu's 27 states. Other Eco-features have also been included, as the airport's managing director, Rob Goldsmith, explained. "We believe the new arrivals hall to be Europe's first carbon neutral airport building and the new solar panel system is at the heart of its energy-efficient design and specification", he said, in a statement.

"What's more, the new building features passive lighting and ventilation throughout, solar shading, the use of air source heat pumps and a computerized building management system that controls the heating, lighting and cooling to maximize resource efficiency".
"In every respect, it is an airport building for the future."
 

Carbon Neutral Airport Building 
Planning approval for this carbon neutral airport building was originally awarded in April 2010. At the time, Mr Goldsmith described what was to come as an "innovative structure", set to produce only 30 per cent of the CO2 emissions produced by the existing arrivals hall and set to be opened in Summer 2011.

The solar cells are individually rated at 230 watts but, together, create a 74.98 kilowatt array and were put in place by photovoltaic technology firm South Facing. Mounted on top of the revitalized arrivals hall, the cells have been deliberately positioned to harness maximum available levels of solar energy, with half of them angled at 30 degrees to the ground and the remainder, 15 degrees.

"The project certainly posed some technical challenges", South Facing's MD, Clive Collison, admitted, in a further solar airport building statement,



"But such an advanced and comprehensive solar power installation takes full advantage of southern orientation of the new Terminal's roof and the fact that the airport is located in one of the sunniest areas in the country".


Bournemouth Airport is in the south of England and, in 2010, handled approximately 750,000 passengers. While not among the UK's largest air travel hubs, it's used by seven different passenger carriers, including Ryanair and Thomas Cook Airlines, and it's also an active air cargo site.

Development Go-Ahead For Asian Airport, Suvarnabhumi

Thailand's busiest airport, already the owner of one of the world's largest terminals and the highest-reaching air traffic control tower, is set to get even larger.

Already currently handling over 40 million passengers a year, Suvarnabhumi Airport will be expanded in phases, ultimately giving it the capacity to handle an astonishing 103 million passengers every 12 months. In the first phase, Suvarnabhumi Airport will gain a new domestic terminal, an additional runway, extra car parking space and more connections to the outside world.

By 2024, two more runways will have been laid down - giving it five in total -while there will be yet more new terminals and car parking facilities installed.
 

Asian Airport Development  
The go-ahead for all three phases of this Asian airport's development was given at the start of August by Airports of Thailand, marking the beginning of a decade-long expansion program. Airports of Thailand was formed in 2002 and handles operations at a total of six sites - Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Hat Yai and Mae Fah Luang-Chiang Rai.

Suvarnabhumi Airport was put into operation in late 2006 but the concept of it actually dates back to the late 1950s. It wasn't until the 1990s that things really started moving and its construction was approved in 1997. Suvarnabhumi (‘The Golden Land') Airport got its name in 2000 and the first elements of its terminal were laid down two years later.
 

Suvarnabhumi Development  
The Suvarnabhumi development project will cost an estimated $5.47 billion to implement. Timescale-wise, phase one is set to have been finished by 2016, phase two by 2020 and phase three by 2024. Suvarnabhumi Airport currently possesses a pair of runways, which sit side by side, and a single terminal, which can process a maximum of 76 passenger flights every hour. The terminal's divided up into seven levels and covers an area of 563,000 square meters.

Spanish police have arrested a Mexican chemistry student they say is suspected of planning some sort of "gas attack" against protesters opposed to Pope Benedict XVI's four-day visit to Spain that begins Thursday.

The Guardian identifies the suspect as 24-year-old Jose Perez Bautista, and reports police said he made online statements that he intended to attack the anti-Pope march.

The U.S. Department of State issued a new Travel Warning for Chad on August 16, 2011 to remind U.S. citizens of the risks of traveling there and to recommend that they should avoid all travel to eastern Chad and all border regions.

From the U.S. State Department Chad Travel Warning:
"This Travel Warning is due to the insecurity caused by high levels of violent crime, the continuing risk of clashes between Chadian government and armed opposition forces, and the risk of sudden outbreak of conflict among the populations living in these areas. In particular, the risks of carjacking and kidnapping for ransom increase as part of factional conflict. The U.S. Embassy in Chad has prohibited official government travel to all areas outside of N'Djamena without express authorization. U.S. citizens affiliated with humanitarian relief efforts should review security precautions and consider measures to mitigate exposure to violent crime. If you are residing in Chad, you should exercise caution throughout the country."

While Iran continually claims its nuclear program has peaceful intentions (research and electricity), the West suspects Tehran is working to develop nuclear weapons.

Beijing Confirms Arms Firms Talked to Libyan Government

The Chinese government confirmed Monday reports that a number of Chinese arms companies held talks with Muammar Gadhafi's regime in July about selling Libya some $200 million in weapons.
Beijing said it knew nothing about these discussions, and no weapons were sold to Gadhafi.
