Royal Albert Hall International Ballroom Dancing Championships

Amateur and professional dancers dramatically splay their legs, strut and swirl in streamline suits and sexy sequined dresses at the annual International Ballroom Dancing Championships. The best dance talent in the country compete at The Royal Albert Hall.
Known as the Elsa Wells Championships to aficionados, around 360 of the world's foremost amateur and professional exponents of competitive Dance Sport compete for the International Standard and Latin titles.

RHS London Autumn Harvest Show

When? 9th - 10th October 2012

The Royal Horticultural Society's annual autumn flower show, held at the Society's Halls in London, features the autumn fruit and vegetable competition, ornamental plant competition, botanical art and photography.

Experts are available to discuss horticultural techniques and the most appropriate autumn bulbs to use in every setting. Many plants are available to buy. Competitions are open to all.

Barcolana


Where? Trieste, Italy

Trieste's Barcolana is an extraordinary spectacle that sees families and professional teams battling it out in old hulls and hi-tech boats. It is now the largest sailing race in Europe and takes place on the last day of a nine-day festival.

Started in 1969 with no more than 50 boats, today more than 2000 vessels participate in the race, also called Coppa d'Autunno. It is named after the Societa Velica di Barcola e Grignano, the sailing club which still manages the competition.

National Pilgrimage of St Rosaire

St Rosaire is celebrated every year in Lourdes with a dedicated pilgrimage and a special mass, held in the holy sanctuary of Notre-Dame du Rosaire. In 1571 Christian troops provided by the Vatican, Spain, Venice and Savoy overcame a Turkish armada in the entrance to the Corinth gulf.

The Pope at the time, Grégoire XIII, attributed this victory to the daily processions of St Rosaire brotherhoods in the streets of Rome. He promptly changed his planned Victory Day to St Rosaire day, to be celebrated on 7 October.

World Food Day

World Food Day is celebrated on 16 October and this year's theme is “Agricultural Cooperatives - key to feeding the world” which has been chosen to highlight the role that cooperatives actually play in improving the security of food and helping towards the eradication of hunger worldwide.

The interest in cooperatives is also evident in the UN General Assembly’s decision to designate the year 2012 “International year of Cooperatives”.

September 2012 Worldwide Events

This September, there is not just one place to be, because there are events happening all around the world. From The Reykjavik International FIlm Festival in Iceland, to The Marrakech International Salsa Festival in Morocco. America offers the peaceful side of the month with Power To The Peaceful Festival in the fabulous Golden Gate Park, San Francisco for yoga, live music and action sports. This is one for the whole family. Elsewhere in the United States, the annual Buffalo Roundup and Arts Festival, South Dakota, offers a combination of rounding Buffalos as well as arts and crafts.

World Car Free Day involves anyone who wants to be, anywhere in the world, as everyone turns off their cars, and get on the bike! The UK offers a variety of events, however the biggest not coming from England, but from the surrounding countries such as The Braemar Gathering in Scotland, and the Galway International Oyster and Seafood Festival in Ireland. However, there is never nothing going on in England. The Jane Austen Festival offers a more intellectual side to the country, and provides a wonderful parade through the town center which is now the biggest regency costume promenade in Europe.

Australia’s Melbourne Fringe Festival showcases the best of new contemporary art in Australia. The independent artists live their festival experience in the friendly and modern Fringe Club. Finally, fancy a beer, or two, or how about 5 million litres? If this sounds like your kind of Festival, head on over to Oktoberfest, Munich, Germany for 16 days of beer, rides and performances along with traditional Bavarian culture.. Cheers!
