February is derived from the Latin word "februum" which means purification from the the purification ritual called Februa that was held on February 15th in the old lunar Roman calendar. When most people think of February, most often Valentine's Day comes to mind but there is a lot more to this, the shortest month of the year. February is packed with many holidays, famous birthdays and celebrations of historic events around the world. In 2013 the Chinese New Year falls on 10th February and the year of the snake begins. The snake is the sixth sign of the Chinese zodiac that represents wisdom, intelligence and self-control. Lent begins on 13th February and historians believe that the collective disposal of foods in the days leading up to Lent led to the rise of the Carnival, a celebration unlike any other on the planet.

The Omega Dubai Desert Classic is an annual professional golf tournament since 1989 that takes place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates as part of the European Tour schedule. Prize money 2.5 million.

Chinese New Year in London, England

London's celebrations of the Chinese New Year are the largest outside Asia with hundreds of thousands of people descending on the West End every year. Festivities commence in the morning with a parade of colourful floats and beating drums, in Trafalgar Square through Chinatown and ending in Rupert Street.  On the main stage in Trafalgar Square there is an opening celebration that sees the Dotting of the Eye ceremony, which will bring the dragons and lions to life and is followed by with stage performances and special guests. Chinatown is the focal point of the New Year party with food and craft stalls line the streets and a lion dance snakes through the crowds. A stunning fireworks display marks the end of the day's celebrations

Dubrovnik Carnival dates back to the 14th century and maintains many of the original traditions to this day. People gather from surrounding areas to dress up in garish costumes, parading down the streets to the sound of trumpets and drums.Jousting competitions take place in the city centre, with men on horseback carrying lances aimed for a silver ring tied to a rope above the horse trail.
