Remember the 5th of November? The fascinating story centered around Guy Fawkes (13 April 1570 – 31 January 1606) often referred to by our overseas friends as Guido Fawkes, who was a member of a group of EnglishRoman Catholic revolutionaries that famously planned to carry out the great Gunpowder Plot.
Although Robert Catesby was the lead figure in conjuring up the actual plot, Fawkes was the man put in charge of executing the plan, as a result of his military and explosives experience. The plot was however foiled, shortly before its intended devastating completion. Fawkes himself was captured in the act, whilst guarding the gunpowder. They were all later executed for treason. Suspicion was aroused because he wore a coat, boots and spurs, as though he intended to leave in a rush! Guy Fawkes most certainly left a lasting mark on history and popular culture in the United Kingdom and even parts of the Commonwealth.
On November 5 the yearly event of Bonfire Night takes place, centered on the concept of the plot and Fawkes the executor. The tradition of this truly remarkable British event still captures the imagination of children and adults alike, as they attend firework displays across Britain to commemorate a strange occurrence in history. All of this despite the safety risks of fireworks and the changes of modern culture in the UK.
The above historic event leads us to conclude that November is somewhat of an unlucky month and from a tourist perspective one of the quietest! The Dimitria Festival Thessaloniki Greece September - November 2009
The Dimitria Festival, held throughout the city of Thessaloniki, presents a wide range of music, theatre and dance and is the biggest event on the city’s annual calendar.
The traditional Thessaloniki feast day commemorating St Demetrios traces its heritage back to the days of the city's Golden Age, when the Byzantines ruled a vast empire from Constantinople (14th and 15th centuries). In those days the feast was known as "The Panathenaea of the Athens of the Middle Ages". Having been all but forgotten, it enjoyed a remarkable revival in the 1960s and has gone from strength to strength ever since.
The festival prides itself on its mix of the traditional with the avant-garde and the range of events is impressive, featuring theatre, opera, dance, music, art and literary seminars. Past contributors have included Alan Bates, Peter Hall, Harold Pinter and major national ballets, operas and symphony orchestras.

Ireland Tralee Kerry Film Festival 31st October - 7th November 2009
The annual Kerry Film Festival screens over 100 films during the week-long event. Taking place in various venues in and around Tralee in County Kerry ranging from an old barn to city cinemas, a great atmosphere prevails and there is plenty of additional entertainment laid on for the many international guests and filmmakers that attend. Films are submitted in six categories: Best Experimental, Best International, Best Animation, Best Documentary, Best Irish and Best Director. There are also a number of workshops throughout the week that are open to all ages. The prestigious festival culminates in a prize-giving ceremony on the final day for the award-winning films.

Melbourne Cup 3rd November 2009
One of the biggest events in Australia's horseracing calendar, the149th Melbourne Cup is the country's richest and most famous horse race. First held in 1961, the race is steeped in tradition and always begins at 15:00 on the first Tuesday in November and is always run over a 3,200M (2 miles) course. But events begin much earlier in the day with the first race of the 10-race programme beginning at 10:20. England, Devon Ottery 5th November 2009
Ottery St Mary is a small town between Exeter and Honiton in East Devon. The Ottery Carnival is split into two parts; the first part consists of a procession of Tableaux and a grand firework display. The second part consists of the lighting of the annual bonfire and the carrying of lighted tar barrels through the streets. November the 5th each year is the traditional day for the Tar Barrels and only changes when the 5th falls on a Sunday. The procession and fireworks are normally on the Saturday before the 5th of November.

Surin Elephant Round-up 21st – 22nd November 2009
Surin, the northeastern province known as ''the Land of Elephants'', has been holding the annual Elephant Round-up for nearly half a century. Internationally famous, the annual event brings thousands of visitors to the Sri Narong Stadium in the provincial city of Surin, where some 200 trained elephants are assembled. Among the spectacular shows are elephant football, tug-of-war between elephants and men, demonstrations of log-pulling skills and a spectacular parade of elephants outfitted for medieval warfare.
