every year 40 days before Easter. The Carnivals highlight event is the Samba Parade, a show, a display and competition of the Rio samba schools. The 2 major days are Carnival Sunday and Monday. This truly spectacular is not to missed! If you really can't afford it and you are in the region try to go on another day, which is significantly cheaper albeit less grand.
