Deterrent Grass Could Stop Airport Bird Strikes

Airport Bird Strikes

Airport bird strikes could become a thing of the past if a newly-developed type of grass is put into widespread use. Conceived and produced in New Zealand, the material may provide a solution to a problem that costs the aviation industry an estimated $1.4bn dollars each year.

The so-called Jackal grass seed incorporates a type of fungus that produces an unpleasant taste for birds and other creatures, giving it deterrent properties suitable for airport settings, especially around runway and taxiway areas.

Birds that eat the grass, which is now being sold as Avanex, aren't harmed by it, but it does make them sick afterwards. It's been undergoing testing since the late 1990s and, as a result, scientists are confident that the fungus-infected grass is enough of an avian deterrent to stop birds eating it again, once they've tried it.
Bird Deterrent Grass

The bird deterrent grass was developed by Doctor Pennell and colleagues at AgResearch - a state-owned New Zealand biotech firm.

"Bird strike is a $1.4 billion problem for the aviation industry...and if we can reduce the attractiveness of an airport to birds, then we don't have to use guns and flashing lights to chase them away", he explained, in comments quoted by One News.

To date, the anti-bird strike grass has been trialled at New Zealand's Christchurch Airport: its now being planted at other sites, including Hamilton and Auckland airports. Of course, the product has applications beyond airport use - potentially, it could be deployed at any location where birds are considered undesirable. But the large, open spaces in and around airports are a long-term location of choice for birds, suggesting they're where Avanex could really come into its own.
Airport Bird Strikes

Data published in 2009 estimated that the annual airport bird strike total stood at about 7,000 incidents and that was just in the US. In around 15 per cent of these events, subsequent aircraft damage occurred. The infamous Hudson River landing took place when the Airbus airliner involved passed through a flock of birds and illustrated, quite graphically, the dangers involved.

Three months ago, Avanex was awarded the prestigious Australasian DuPont Innovation Award for Performance Materials. In a press release published to highlight this achievement, Cameron Henley from PGG Wrightson Turf - the company responsible for Avanex' commercial expansion - described it as a "...remarkable international accolade for a technology developed in New Zealand by AgResearch, holding potentially significant safety benefits for airports and sports facilities worldwide."

"We are proud to be a part of the development of this exciting technology and to bring Avanex to the market", he added.

Russia's Soyuz Rockets Grounded During Accident Investigation

Russia lost an unmanned Progress cargo space craft Wednesday after it failed to separate from its Soyuz-U carrier rocket and crashed back into the Earth somewhere in Siberia.
The space freighter was to deliver 2.7 tons of food, medical and scientific equipment, and other items to the International Space Station (ISS).
While the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, says the loss of the supplies does not compromise the safety of the ISS astronauts, the real problem is that Russia has now grounded its Soyuz rocket program until it can figure out what caused the accident. This means there is no way to get supplies or a replacement crew to the ISS.
Should the astronauts need to abandon the ISS they can use the Russian-made escape vehicle docked there.

United Replacing Paper Flight Decks with iPads

Superpad 10.2" Tablet PC, Google Android 2.1, Webcam, GPS, HDMI, USB, WIFI, 2 micro SD card slots
United has begun replacing its pilot-issued flight decks with iPads. By the end of the year all 11,000 United and Continental pilots will have their own iPads instead of the 38 pounds of paper operating manuals, navigation charts, reference handbooks, flight checklists, logbooks and weather information that is carried in their flight bags.
United is the first airline to go completely paperless with its flight decks. The company says the change will save 16 million sheets of paper and 326,000 gallons of jet fuel a year.

Ibiza Closing Parties

When: Until September 2011
Where: The Island of Ibiza, Balearics, Spain
From the end of May until the end of September, Ibiza is the distinct party capital of Europe. As clubbing destinations go, it is simply peerless.
And with such a defined and short season, it is no surprise that the parties that open and close the period are huge affairs.
For clubbers and lovers of dance music, the clubs are what makes it special. At once decadent yet unpretentious, expensive yet hedonistic, the names roll off the clubbers wall of fame; Amnesia, Pacha, El Divino, Es Paradis, Space, Privilege few will be leaving for home before the sun rises over the Mediterranean.
Taking a trip to the 'white isle' at any time over the summer will be spectacular, but as the season winds down the clubs go just that little but further to extract one final hurrah out of the season. And that is why attending during the closing parties (which never seem to be one night, but a series of 'closings') is the most special. The partying will be more frantic, the in club experience will be heightened with flame throwers, dancers and more and the clubs will pull out all the stops to tempt the best names in djing and promotion to finish off their season in style.
At Euro 50-60 a pop, entry can be expensive, but the clubs make it well make it.

Killer Sharks in Seychelles

Sharks of the World (Princeton Field Guides)
A British man on his honeymoon has been killed by a shark in the Seychelles, less than a fortnight after a French tourist was also fatally bitten in the waters off the same island.

The 30-year-old, named as Ian Redmond from Lancashire, was attacked on Tuesday while his bride was sunbathing on the shore, according to reports. The shark struck in the waters off Anse Lazio beach on the island of Praslin, the second largest in the Indian Ocean archipelago and a popular destination with honeymooning Britons.

A tourist in a dinghy dragged the man on board and brought him ashore and another holidaymaker then tried to save his life, according to a report in the Daily Mail. "We heard screaming and people started running down the beach towards the water," an American tourist was quoted as saying. "Someone had seen a fin sticking out of the water, and then we saw a dinghy pulling a man from the water".

"I saw the swimmer, who was missing a huge chunk of flesh from his left leg, so much so that I could see the bone of his thigh. He was sickeningly pale, but still had his flippers on both feet".

"At this point a woman ran over and started screaming. She said: 'That's my husband! We were just married."

"Someone grabbed her and tried to keep her away. People all over the beach were just hugging whoever was close to them or trying to keep any children from witnessing what was going on."

Authorities in the Seychelles have asked for help from shark experts in South Africa to identify the creature, and a temporary ban on swimming or entering the waters around parts of Praslin has been ordered. The Seychelles minister for home affairs and environment, Joel Morgan, also held an emergency meeting in the capital Victoria as the government tried to limit the potential damage to the tourism industry, the country's main source of foreign exchange. The Seychelles' profile was given a boost in the UK when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent their honeymoon on North Island in May. Alain St Ange, the head of the Seychelles tourism board, told the Daily Telegraph: "It was a freak accident. We are closing the beaches pending the arrival of experts from South Africa."

Fatal shark attacks in the Seychelles are thought to be rare – prior to the death of the French tourist the last recorded fatal attack there was recorded in 1963, according to local media reports. The Foreign Office said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in the Seychelles. We are providing consular assistance to the next of kin."

The French tourist who died while snorkeling on 1 August was named in the Seychelles media as Nicolas Francois Virolle, 36. Other tourists on the beach were said to have hauled his body from the sea but he died from a massive loss of blood.

Airport Tsunami Risk Highest for Haneda

Tsunami
New data has identified Japan's Tokyo International Airport as the one most likely to be the victim of a future tsunami.

When the east coast of Japan was struck by a tsunami in March, it was Sendai Airport that was most badly-damaged. Tokyo International (also known as Haneda) and Narita International were both affected but Sendai became submerged under a wave of water and mud, which halted operations there for over a month.

However, statistically, Haneda is the site most at risk, according to the work carried out by University College London's Matt Owen.

Airport Tsunami Risk
For his airport tsunami risk report, he drew on data compiled by NOAA - the US National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration - relating to historical tsunamis and then looked at this alongside earthquake data.

In both instances, Owen studied the size of these events, and how often they were happening. He deduced from this that Pacific coastlines were the most susceptible areas, then looked at the airports in these parts of the world.

Haneda Tsunami Risk
By using a ranking system, he placed Tokyo Haneda at the top of a list of airports in areas where tsunamis had occurred most frequently and most severely. Expressed in terms of marks out of five, Haneda's tsunami risk emerged as the highest, with a ‘five' given on both fronts, whereas Sendai got a ‘four'.

Another Japanese airport, Nagoya (Chubu Centrair International Airport) got a ‘four' as far as tsunami frequency was concerned but the report author recognized that, when tsunamis did occur, they were extreme, so a ‘five' for severity was duly awarded.

Elsewhere, Hawaii's Honolulu Airport achieved the opposite, and got a ‘four' for severity and a ‘five' for frequency.

Flood defense mechanisms are in place at all of these sites but, says Owen, the results reinforce the need to implement stronger features for the future.

Airport protection is seen as a vital measure for several reasons, both economic and humanitarian. In this way, Owen's colleague at UCL, Mark Maslin, makes the point that, in times of human crisis, airports provide a platform for relief aid to be delivered. Their continued operability is therefore vital.

US Airport Security Breaches: 25,000+ Since 2001

Security Breach: The Murder of Tod McQuaid
New data released by the US government on 13th July has highlighted how US airports experienced over 25,000 individual security breaches over the past decade and stressed that current luggage screening technologies are, in the main, well outmoded.

According to the data – recorded between November 2001 and the present day – over 14,000 passengers successfully accessed restricted parts of airports, while others made the journey from terminal to aircraft without authorisation.

However, a representative for the US Transport Security Administration inferred, it’s important to view these statistics within the wider US air travel situation, with the numbers identified representing a minute percentage of the 5.5 billion passengers that passed through one or more of the 450 dominant airports in the US during the timeframe covered.

Likewise, Nicholas Kimball explained, the word ‘breach’ has a wide definition and can refer to non-deliberate violations, with no significant impact of the safety of the public.

US Airport Security Breaches

News organization USA Today was the first source to publish information related to these 25,000 airport security breaches in the US and, as this article was being prepared, the data was about to go before the House national security subcommittee.

“Many of these instances were thwarted or discovered in the act”, USA Today quoted Kimball as having stressed. “These events were reported, investigated and remedied. … We have taken extensive steps to increase the safety of the traveling public, and that is why airports today are safer than ever before.”

As per the information issued by the Government Accountability Office, a number of luggage-screening systems are over a decade out of date and many more are operating up to the 2005 standard. Since 2005, there have been two sweeping US airport security overhauls implemented, most recently in January 2010, in light of the attempted Christmas Day mid-air explosion.

25,000 Airport Security Infringements

Even so, Kimball countered, in light of the release of this 25,000 airport security infringements data, explosive-detection technologies deployed at US airports still supply what he termed “the most stringent level of checked baggage security in the world.”

“All new EDS [Explosive Detection System] units purchased by TSA and technologies currently undergoing lab testing allow TSA to upgrade the software to meet revised standards without replacing the physical equipment”
, he continued.

“New EDS units purchased by TSA and technologies undergoing lab testing meet the 2010 standard.”

Airport Technology will return to this subject in future News coverage.

New London Thames Airport Plans Released

Airport
London-based architectural firm Foster + Partners is working with engineering consultancy firm Halcrow Group Limited on London's future airport design.

The Thames Airport would be a massive air travel site and is envisaged as the current Heathrow Airport's replacement. It would be constructed in the Thames Estuary area, east of London, and have the capacity to handle 150 million passengers a year (London Heathrow, by comparison, handled close to 66 million in 2010).

The Thames Airport would feature several features optimized to its environment, including the use of renewable energy derived from tidal power and flood barriers to keep the airport free of water ingress. It's also one element of a much wider UK transport program, generating stronger links between existing road, sea and air travel facilities.

London Thames Airport Plans
More detailed information on the London Thames Airport plans is set to be published later on this summer but, for now, the subject's been covered in a Foster + Partners press release, which emerged at the start of August 2011.

"These visionary proposals are far from future fantasy", Lord Foster was quoted as having said in the press release. "They are both essential and down to earth. When you look at the eastwards thrust of London's infrastructure, with the Channel Tunnel and the Olympics, you can see how it would be possible to create a 24-hour airport.

"This move would greatly improve the quality of life for Londoners by reducing pollution and improving security. It would also allow London to compete with rapidly expanding airports in Europe and the Middle East."

New London Airport
"The Thames Hub would provide a major economic boost for Kent and Essex, with the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs over a number of years and provide noise and air pollution relief for London's population", Halcrow's David Kerr added, in further comments on the new London airport.

"The proposals would make a significant contribution to the UK's commitment to reduce carbon emissions. If the UK is to remain globally competitive, these proposals need to be seriously considered."

The idea of a new London airport
in this part of the world actually dates back to the 1970s and, three years ago, was again brought into focus by the Mayor of London.

Newark Liberty Has Most US Airport Flight Delays

Delayed Flight
What's the most delayed US airport flight? According to newly-released data, it's Delta Air Lines Flight 2743, which operates between Newark Liberty International and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International airports.

Second-placed is the same carrier's Flight 2843, which covers an identical route.

The two services are, on average, one hour 23 minutes (83 minutes) and one hour 19 minutes (79 minutes) late, respectively and, because of these and other delays, Newark Liberty is recognized as the most flight-delayed airport of any in the United States.

The figures come from a US Department of Transportation division, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, which says that, even though there's been a decrease in overall US airport flight levels - owing to oil price rises - delays to flights carry on increasing regardless.

Newark Liberty International Airport is the US' 14th-busiest but hosts a staggering 40 per cent of the most-delayed arrivals or departures in the country, the Bureau adds.

Most Delayed US Airport Flights
The top two slots in the ten most delayed US airport flights are both occupied by Newark Airport departures, with the remainder of the group comprising of flights leaving Dallas Love Field Airport, Memphis International Airport, Chicago O'Hare International Airport, LaGuardia Airport and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International.

According to industry analysts, scheduling issues are to blame in general, with carriers failing to produce realistic operational schedules tied-in with actual airport handling limits. In Newark's case, airline schedules exceed runway handling limits by almost two-to-one.

US Airport Flight Delays
Another US airport flight delay issue is linked to variations in aircraft size, with the same separation safety criteria applied to small, business-type jets as to the largest passenger carriers, both when they're in the air and when they're on the ground.

These analysts suggest that passengers avoid the worst-hit airports but, if that's not possible, try and pick the first (and, therefore, the least-delayed) flight of the day.

Along with LaGuardia and JFK airports, Newark Liberty is operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. A main hub for Continental Airlines, it handled over 33 million passengers in 2010.

Heathrow’s ULTra PRT Robot Taxis Now In Service

Monster Taxi 2007 Sampler
The ULTra PRT (Personal Rapid Transit) electric robot pods, previewed by Airport International back in August 2009, have now entered full operational service at the UK's flagship airport, London Heathrow.

Commissioned by Heathrow's operator, BAA, and developed by the ULTra PRT firm, the system's comprised of 3.86 kilometers of track and 22 individual pods.

The pods, which are entirely autonomous, link a pair of parking lots with the airport's newest passenger facility, Terminal 5, and they're available around the clock. That's not to say that they run 24/7, but that a passenger can ‘hail' one any time he/she likes.

In the absence of a constantly-running service, the system reportedly saves energy, compared to older transport methods. There are other environmental features, too, including the batteries that power them, which are recycled once they've been worn out.

Heathrow Robot Taxi
The frame of each Heathrow robot taxi is constructed from a plastic/steel mixture, making it fairly lightweight, while tubeless 13 inch tires run between the underside of the pods and the track. The track itself is two-way, allowing multiple services to be run at one time.

Each pod is capable of accommodating four passengers plus their luggage and, at present, they're used by something like 800 passengers on a daily basis. The speed of these airport robot pods peaks at about 25 miles per hour and, since the fleet became operational, they've shown themselves to be pretty reliable, with a five per cent failure rate.

The Personal Rapid Transport concept is not unique to Heathrow Airport but nowhere else has it been implemented on the same kind of scale.

ULTra PRT Airport System
Research is now taking place into expanding use of the ULTra PRT airport system into other parts of the hub, potentially involving additional Heathrow terminals.

In related news, London Heathrow has set a new monthly passenger record of 6.9 million passengers.

Commenting on the figures, which related to July 2011, BAA attributed them to a leap in long-haul flights, amongst other factors. In fact, the final day of the month - Sunday 31 - was the busiest ever day at London Heathrow.

Heathrow is Official London Olympics Airport

The Official History of the Olympic Games and the IOC: Athens to Beijing, 1894-2009 (Official History of the Olympic Games & the Ioc)
Full confirmation has now been given that London Heathrow will be the official London 2012 Olympic Games airport. Similarly, it will be the official host airport for the subsequent Paralympic Games, too.

Consequently, it's now anticipated that the 13 August 2012 - the day after the Olympic Games - will be busier than any other day in Heathrow's history. Never before will Heathrow have handled over 200,000 bags over a 24 hour period and the actual figure could exceed even that, beating the current 160,00-bag record.

Heathrow's expected to be the airport of choice for close to 80 per cent of all Olympic-related passenger traffic, including officials, spectators, reporters and, of course, the athletes themselves. That's not to say that other London airports won't figure at all but Heathrow will certainly more active than anywhere else.

London Olympics Airport
The predicted levels of passenger traffic come, in part, from discussions held between BAA officials and those involved in operating other airports which have previously acted as Olympic host sites. According to one representative, it was these that indicated that London Olympics airport travel volumes would spike immediately after the event had finished.

"We expect people will arrive in dribs and drabs but they will all want to leave on the same day", the representative explained.

Typically, says BAA, passengers passing through Heathrow bring with them one-and-a-half items of luggage, on average. Where Olympic participants are concerned, this figure can be expected to increase three-fold. Additionally, large items of luggage will make up a significant percentage of the overall Heathrow Olympic Games traffic - objects such as vaulting poles, canoes and bikes that are too bulky to be processed in the usual way.

Olympic Games: Heathrow
It's clear that, in general, the Olympic Games will give Heathrow a number of challenges, but solutions are being sought. One possibility being looked into is a dedicated Olympic terminal, which would be erected before the event and dismantled as soon as it's over.

"We are tremendously proud to be the host airport of the London 2012 Games", Colin Matthews, the Chief Executive of BAA, said, in a statement published on the official Heathrow Airport website.

"Heathrow will be the first and last impression of the London 2012 Games for thousands of people. London 2012 will be Heathrow's greatest challenge. Every part of the airport is working together so we can give the world's greatest athletes the world's greatest welcome."

Go-ahead for Vietnam's Largest Airport

 Indochina Chronicles (1974-1975)
A proposed layout for the largest airport in Vietnam's history has been unveiled, paving the way for its construction to begin in four years time.

Just over two months ago, formal approval for Long Thanh International Airport's go-ahead was given by the Vietnamese Prime Minister. Now, a plan's emerged for the massive new hub, which will ultimately be able to handle 100m passengers per annum. That 100 million passenger level however, won't be reached until 2035, when the final construction phase, out of three, has been finished.

The expectations for Vietnam's Long Thanh International Airport are considerable. Over $10bn is being invested into it and it's predicted to become a major South East Asian gateway. With Ho Chi Minh City - the country's largest - approximately 40 kilometres away, the new Vietnamese airport will be developed in line with a tourist influx that's already happening and increasing by up to 20 per cent each year, as more and more visitors journey to the area.

Long Thanh International Airport
Long Thanh International Airport will cover a 50 square kilometre area and boast no less than four runways, each of them 4,000 metres in length. Complementing its passenger capacity, the site will also process a maximum of five million metric tonnes of cargo every 12 months.

Its initial phase development - slated for 2015-2020 -will see the first pair of runways laid down and associated infrastructure added around them. This will give the site an initial operating capacity of 25m passengers per annum - a figure that will effectively double once phase 2's added a third runway in 2030.

Vietnam's Largest Airport
Once the fourth runway's in place, and the 100m passenger level reached, Long Thanh will be Vietnam's largest airport.

Ho Chi Ming City's presently served by Tan Son Nhat International Airport, but that site has now become seriously overloaded, handling 15-and-a-half million passengers last year.

As reported by Airport International, Vietnam opened a brand new airport at the very start of 2011. Can Tho International Airport's not a development on the same scale as Long Thanh but will still handle a considerable five million passengers a year.

Competition Commission Forces BAA Stansted Sale

 Airport Competition
BAA, the British airport operator, is now compelled to sell London Stansted Airport and one out of Edinburgh or Glasgow airports, as dictated by the Competition Commission.

Re-stressing a preliminary decision announced in March, in response to an appeal made by BAA's controlling group, Spanish firm Ferrovial, the commission has now given its final word on the matter.

Now, a two-year battle has been brought to an end, with BAA the losing party. In March 2009, BAA was the position of owning no less than seven airports in the UK. However, the commission said this was, in effect, unfair, and, shortly afterwards, London Gatwick airport was sold to GIP (Global Infrastructure Partners) through a £1.5bn deal.

BAA Airport Sale

That same message of enhancing competition opportunities within the airport industry, for the benefit of both carriers and passengers, was asserted again today by the CC in its ultimate
BAA airport sale announcement.

"The CC has concluded that the sale of the airports is fully justified and that passengers and airlines would still benefit from greater competition with the airports under separate ownership, despite the current government's decision to rule out new runways at any of the London airports", it stated, adding: "The sales process will start in three months' time, or sooner if undertakings are accepted from BAA in the meantime."

BAA itself has hinted at the possibility of legal action and, in its statement, said that the CC's sale verdict would "...damage our company which is investing strongly in UK jobs and growth."

Stansted Airport Sale
"We have a responsibility to protect our shareholders' investment and we will now consider a judicial review of the Competition Commission's decision", it explained, adding that 2009's and 2011 market conditions are quite different but that's not, apparently, evident to the CC. "A new government has changed aviation policy to rule out any new runway capacity in the south east [of England] and BAA has sold Gatwick Airport. Both are significant changes to the airport market", BAA said, in further comments on the proposed Stansted Airport sale.

According to the CC, London Stansted Airport should be the first to go, with one of the pair of Scottish hubs following thereafter.

US Airport Passenger Image Scan Upgrades

Full Body Scanner: A WikiFocus Book (WikiFocus Book Series)
The US government agency charged with ensuring the safety and security of airport passengers in the United States is changing the way passengers are scanned at tens of sites across the country.

The original introduction of full-body scanners, which capture in-depth images of travellers in the search for concealed weapons, potentially explosive devices and other material, generated much controversy. Now, says the Transport Security Administration, all millimetre wave scanners deployed at US airports will have their software upgraded. As a result, the images that are studied by TSA officials working there will not represent the actual passengers being scanned but, rather, portray them generically.

So-called AIT (Advanced Imaging Technology) scanners made their airport debut in 2007. To this day, they're not a compulsory measure, but passengers that refuse them can expect to be rigorously patted-down, instead.

Generic Airport Passenger Image Scans
In a statement on the new generic airport passenger image scans, the administrator of the TSA, John Pistole, emphasised that while travellers' privacy concerns should now be alleviated, the security aspect would remain as robust as ever.

"Our top priority is the safety of the traveling public, and TSA constantly strives to explore and implement new technologies that enhance and strengthen privacy protections for the traveling public", he stressed. "This software upgrade enables us to continue providing a high level of security through advanced imaging technology screening, while improving the passenger experience at checkpoints."

US Airport Scanner Upgrades
Along with the altered image, one more major change will result from the US airport scanner upgrades, too. From now on, passengers will be permitted to look at the images themselves whereas, at present, that option isn't available and is solely restricted to TSA workers positioned in isolated areas.

The generic passenger images will still indicate the presence of potentially non-secure items in a standard way. If threats are detected, the passengers responsible for presenting them will be subjected to extra screening. If, however, it's an all-clear, the AIT system will display an ‘OK' message.

The full-body scanner software upgrade was developed through a collaboration between TSA and the Science and Technology Directorate - the US Department of Homeland Security's R+D offshoot organisation.

Finnish Airport Trials Bluetooth Passenger Tracking

 Passengers
Finland’s largest airport is putting everyday communications technology to a new use in a programme intended to speed up the travel experience for passengers. And it’s the passengers themselves that are helping to make it work.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport’s new passenger tracking system involves Bluetooth signals generated by mobile phones. While Bluetooth is typically used to send data from one communications platform to another, it can also serve as a status indicator.

In the airport’s case, it’s being used to track passengers passing through security. It can show how quickly security and screening are being carried out simply by doing what it normally does but the really clever part is that the results are highlighted on a prominent display screen.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport passengers viewing this screen, which shows the average waiting time associated with particular queues, then have the option to relocate to another queue. On that basis, it’s a system that benefits airlines and passengers alike, not to mention the airport itself.

Bluetooth Airport Passenger Tracking

Right now, the Bluetooth airport passenger tracking system is being put through trials but, so long as it’s successful, it’s set to be introduced permanently later on in the summer.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport is operated by state-owned Finavia and it’s been in operation since the 1950s. In 2010, it was used by close to 13 million passengers: of the airports based in Northern European nations, only Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm-Arlanda were busier.

The new tracking measure is comparable to pre-existing systems installed at Oslo Airport, Copenhagen Airport and London Heathrow in recent times.

Finnish Airport Bluetooth Trial

“The method is currently in the testing phase, but by the end of next month, passengers will be able to see the average queuing times on security control monitors”, Finavia’s airliners and passengers head, Pirjo Lähteelä, explained in a press release on the Finnish airport Bluetooth trial.

“Presenting queuing times is part of a project, in which Finavia is working to improve the smoothness and customer service of its security control operations.”
“Last spring, queuing times were significantly reduced by restructuring queue management”, he added.

Helsinki Airport officials have stressed that the Bluetooth passenger tracking solution doesn’t represent a security compromise, since personal data such as the name assigned to each device, or its mobile number, aren’t detected.
