Majestic springtime in Japan!

The Japanese cherry trees, also known as "sakura", are one of the most well-known Spring symbols in Japan. They start to bloom in mid-March in many parks and streets in Japan, while many cities experience this special event until May.

Schools in Japan start in April, which is the same period the cherry trees bloom. At that time, many Japanese people choose to go on a picnic under the cherry trees, a tradition named Hanami and has its roots back in the 8th century!

Scariest Holiday Destinations!

Want to spice up your vacation this year?

Here is a list of the scariest destinations on earth! Of course, there are many more spooky places but these are the ones that caught our attention!

Queen Mary, California, USA
Queen Mary is an ocean liner that sailed the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967. The Queen Mary was purchased by the city of Long Beach in 1967 and transformed into a hotel. The most haunted area of the ship is the engine room where a 17-year-old sailor was crushed to death trying to escape a fire. Knocking and banging on the pipes around the door has been heard and recorded by numerous people. In what is now the front desk area of the hotel, visitors have seen the ghost of a “lady in white.” Ghosts of children are said to haunt the ship’s pool.
La Xochimilco, Mexico
La Xochimilco channel in Mexico is covered with hundreds of dolls . The dolls are hung from trees in order to keep the evil spirits away and to remember the death of the girl who drowned here.

Transylvania, Romania
Bram Stoker set his blood-chilling novel, Dracula, in the central Romanian region of Transylvania.Legend has it, the fictional character Count Dracula was inspired by a real-life Romanian royal, Vlad Dracula, nicknamed "Vlad the Impaler." His nickname, the Impaler, references his preferred form of murder: impaling people to death.

Salem, Massachusetts, USA
The Witch House is the last remaining building with a direct connection to the 17th-century Salem witch trials – it was the home of judge Jonathan Corwin, who famously sent 19 innocent women to the gallows.A wave of accusations of witchcraft swept this Massachusetts town, with a number of women subjected to bizarre examinations and accused of being proponents of the dark arts.

Edinburg, Scotland
Edinburgh Castle is reputed to be one of the most haunted spots in Scotland. And Edinburgh itself has been called the most haunted city in all of Europe. On various occasions, visitors to the castle have reported a phantom piper, a headless drummer, the spirits of French prisoners from the Seven Years War and colonial prisoners from the American Revolutionary War – even the ghost of a dog wandering in the grounds’ dog cemetery.

A recent passenger survey by www.travelocity.com involving more than 1500 people has revealed some of the most annoying travellers habits.

While reading these behaviors, some of you will, no doubt, smile with guilt. On the other hand, some of you will nod along feeling the anger after being the "victim" of such disturbing attitudes.
Strangely, some of you, including me, are going to experience both!

Top 10 reasons to retire to Uruguay

Once dubbed as the Switzerland of South America, Uruguay, is also famous for its beach resorts and safe easy living, which  is attracting attention as a great place to retire.

Here below is a Top 10 list of reasons why to retire to Uruguay:
  1. Safety: Simply put this is the top criteria for people from other parts of South America. In order to relocate it must be safe! Uruguay now has a reputation for enjoying the lowest rate of crime in the whole of South America, which makes it an attractive place to settle.
  2. Stability: At present Uruguay is without doubt one of the most economically and politically stable countries in South America. It is a free country away from the ills of world controversy. The local banks have never succumbed to tactics shown in other South American countries such as expropriating, freezing or forcing a fixed currency exchange of deposits. Over the last few decades they have proved to be as trustworthy as a bank can be.
  3. Excellent Health care: Private hospitals feature an excellent patient-care all at reasonable prices. It is feasible to buy health care they need and others purchase health plans with a fixed monthly fee.
  4. Low Tax: This of course has to be on the agenda! Pleasingly, Uruguay does not levy any Tax on foreign income sources. In essence this translate to NO pension, social security and all money earned outside outside the country.
  5. Infrastructure: Uruguay has a decent infrastructure with roads in condition, safe to drink tap water, a good network of public transportation, excellent cell phone coverage across the country and widespread availability of broad-band internet.
  6. Lifestyle: Uruguay offers different contrasts in Lifestyle from the cosmopolitan capital city life in Montevideo to life on the beach with 200 miles of stunning coast to explore during the summer months Punta del Este is of course the king of the summer resorts and features a high quality 24-hour cocktail of lifestyle activities, cultural and musical events. A country lifestyle is also possible in Uruguay boasting green rolling prairies, ranches and village plazas.
  7. Climate: Uruguay is situated within a temperate zone of the Southern Hemisphere. The region has 4 seasons and temperatures during the daytime average between 21° C > 27° C (70° F > 80° F ) during the summer months and between 10° C > 16°C (50° F > 60° F) in winter.
  8. Nature: Uruguay is a beautiful country and has never had an earthquake or a hurricane.
  9. Education: The population in Uruguay is well educated overall, friendly and welcoming to visitors. In fact, the country boasts the most highly educated population in addition to the greatest middle-class population in the whole of Latin America.
  10. Residency: The residency procedure is not too complex. All u  need to do is a criminal background check, a health examination and a confirmation of a regular income, such as a pension.
So if you want to get away from the austerity of Europe or the crime of the US, Uruguay provides an interesting alternative.

Top Worldwide Events in June!

June is the sixth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and one of the four months with a length of 30 days.

Ovid provides two etymologies for June's name in his poem concerning the months entitled the Fasti. The first is that the month is named after the Roman goddess Juno, wife of Jupiter and equivalent to the Greek goddess Hera; the second is that the name comes from the Latin word iuniores, meaning "younger ones", as opposed to maiores ("elders") for which the preceding month May may be named.

June is the month with the longest daylight hours of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and the shortest daylight hours of the year in the Southern Hemisphere.

June in the Northern Hemisphere is the seasonal equivalent to December in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa.

As the Baby Boomers reach the ever expanding retirement age, they will soon desire the great secret of life "How to grow old healthily".

A recent study published in Canadian Medical Association Journal actually identifies 4 healthy behaviors that are widely believed to increase the chances of staying healthy in old age.

The 4 healthily behaviors are a combination of:
  1. Regular exercise (at least 2.5 hours a week of moderately intense physical activity)
  2. A healthy diet (Eating fruits and vegetables on a daily basis)
  3. Moderate alcohol consumption (1-14 units a week for women & 1-21 units a week for men

Top 10 Recession Proof Travel Tips for 2013

Everyone in the West seems to be tightening their belts at present, as our planet's global recession (reported in some media circles within the West to be the worst since the Second World War) starts to enter the austerity pain threshold for Joe Public. Both small and large Travel Companies are actively seeking means and ways to reduce costs, convenience and little luxuries at all costs in a frantic effort to decrease credit, liability, risk and perceived unnecessary baggage.

People and their families the world over still desire to travel though, as in the past utopia years of Tourism, people across the developed world have habitually become accustomed by the very ritual of leisure travel and taking regular holidays. But will they take the plunge and travel regardless this coming year in the face of austerity? Or will the vast majority be turned off by the media, high costs and gloom involved? Certainly the leisure market is both apprehensive and pessimistic at the Tourism outlook in 2013.

The reality is however, whilst it’s natural, given the doom and gloom we are constantly fed by the media, that people are on tight Budgets and are seeking to trade down and save money, the annual holiday abroad is seemingly one thing that is unlikely to be given up very easily. A vacation abroad every year has effectively become an expected lifestyle pattern and that despite difficult times, people still need to escape from it all, perhaps even more so!

So for those of you reading who are still gainfully employed, its actually never been a better time to travel! This is additionally due in part to the fact that the marketplace is currently focusing on quality in balance with value and some of the resorts and havens of the Tourism world that were becoming horribly overcrowded and even rather arrogant are now changing their tune and putting out the red carpet for a lot less.

Consequently, if you have some spare cash and the desire to travel, the core cost of flight and accommodation is lower and less in demand than ever before in recent memory. Subsequently, the savvy Perpetual Traveller out there can travel and enjoy life at a fraction of the cost before, if the destination and planning is done in advance and wisely. We therefore dedicate this edition of Perpetual Traveller to share with you some insider trade tips in addition to a selection of the best input and contribution from our readers on “Recession Proof Travel Tips”…

1. When and where to Book
If you’re checking out flight costs on the Internet, be aware of the actual physical time that you are surfing online, as prices can vary by the hour. The reason for this is that many online websites are set so that the more consumer hits recorded online, the higher the flight costs become (in other words, the price rises in line with perceived demand). The best time to search for flights is late at night or when you are able to reliably predict that the online traffic is low!

There are many online providers, however many of the most well known capitalize on their brand awareness and search engine prowess, which often comes at a higher cost, as you are paying for the marketing.

FLIGHT BOOKINGS
The below links will take you to websites with extended search capabilities encompassing all flights including low cost. In all our tests they came up the cheapest, often displaying unusual options to save money.

Here are the best sites to use for low cost flight searches:
HOTEL BOOKINGS
The below links take you to the best low cost Hotel Booking Engines
  1. Leisure & Lifestyle
  2. Booking.com

Note: To obtain 5% Cashback via PayPal on your Leisure & Lifestyle Bookings please contact the above mentined email also.

2. End of month syndrome
Avoid making flight bookings at the end of the month (Pay day). For your interest, according to online booking engine experts, peak time is: Tuesday Lunch Hour and between 7pm - 10pm weekdays.

3. Go Indirect
Don’t always go for a direct flight options as these are expensive. Look at other ways to reach your destination. Longer Yes, but cheaper! Seek the possibility to utilize and link Budget Airlines leaving enough time to connect. Although you will have to collect your luggage each time, the price could be significantly different and you are more likely to retrieve your luggage, as connections are the most common cause of lost luggage.

4. Visa Electron
Get a Visa Electron. When making purchases abroad such cards do not usually charge the hidden currency conversion transaction fee. On most Low Cost Airlines the Visa Electron card charge is either free or cheaper.

Visa Electron is either cheaper or in some cases free in terms of the currency charge. Debit & Visa Card charges have become ridiculously high during the boom and it’s become like a stealth tax on all travel purchases. The best card on the planet we know is the UK’s trusty Nationwide Flex card that features no handling fee for cash withdrawals worldwide and no currency conversion transaction charge, meaning that significant savings are made every time cash is withdrawn or purchases are made.

5. Last Minute
If you are flexible and willing go on a Standby basis, one can obtain amazing deals at the very last moment. Shop around and make your time as flexible as possible. This would be true for flights and accommodation. Start tracking prices as early as possible, so that you know when you find a super deal.

Warning: Do not leave it to the last minute to book flights and/or Hotels when you know it could be busy and you have to go anyway. Christmas, WTM and other large city conferences, August etc are best booked well in advance.

6. The best days to fly
If you’re taking a break don’t take it at the same as everyone else! In terms of the week this is usually over the busy weekend including Friday. Try flying mid-week and more often than not you will achieve a notable saving.

In terms of the right time of year, July, August and the beginning of September are traditionally busiest. Also try to avoid traveling around bank and public holidays or you will lose most of your precious time in traffic Jams and queues, then pay more to book your Flight and Hotel, just for the privilege.

7. Budget flights
Purchase your in-flight snacks before going onboard, as costs can be a startling 3 times higher than on the ground! Beware of exaggerated airport prices too and try to pre-empt your needs in a local supermarket beforehand.

8. Budget extras
If you’re booking a Budget flight online, you need to be super careful of all the Extras (many of which are automatically checked). Instead of asking if you want priority boarding or Insurance for example, some airlines automatically and frustratingly pre-check this box. Such online tactics are akin to con tricks and an expression of desperation on the strategy of certain Budget Airlines.

If you’re not Internet savvy you could easily miss these tricks and each Budget airline has a different way of featuring the information too, so watch out. Recently I purchased a flight on Air Asia and after 20 attempts it was impossible to accomplish the booking without the insurance, which I did not need. Easyjet, Ryan air, Whizz and more besides are culprits of such annoying tactics, which can elevate prices to higher than scheduled airlines on occasions, so it always pays to cross-reference and keep all factors into consideration.

9. Travel light
Airlines these days are charging a fortune when its comes to check-in luggage. I mean really 15 kgs (the weight that Ryanair adopts) for a 2 week vacation is a bit much, as a woman's shoes alone weigh this much! Again if you need to bring more luggage, scheduled airlines may in the long run provide you with a better option all things considered. We are entering the era of packing light and with some discipline it is possible, but it needs a mentality shift and some planning.

It must be said too that the convenience of not having to collect luggage at the baggage reclaim makes the concept of taking only hand luggage on board most attractive, especially for business and short trips. Here Ryanair the markets traditional lowest allowance only permits 7kg, whereas Easyjet allows any weight within reason, but restricts the size, which in our view is a sensible policy.

10. Go electronic
The cost of choosing what is becoming an outdated paper airline ticket is now on average a more costly affair. If you opt for an e-ticket and print it out online, you pay zero (no ticket issue charge) and achieve the lowest available price. Once you have your e-ticket for convenience you can check-in online, meaning that you save precious time by not going to the airport ridiculously early. With no check-in luggage you can go straight through to the Departure Lounge also.

In summary, there has never been a better time to travel and using the above tricks you can save a fortune too!

Here’s wishing you pleasurable Perpetual Travels in 2013!

Look Away or Pay the $5 fee Just for Looking!

Given the financial crisis that has influenced every aspect of our life the last 4-5 years, you have to be creative in order to be successful. Businesses have to go every possible way in order to stand tall and make profit.

However, creativeness can be tricky, it can bring to success or to a big failure.

You choose what the case is for Celiac Supplies, a gluten free shop in Brisbane, that posted an image of a sign on its front door getting quickly positive and negative attention as well.

The sign reads:
"Dear Customers,

As of the first of February, this store will be charging people a $5 fee per person for "just looking."
The $5 fee will be deducted when goods are purchased.

That's because there has been high volume of people who use this store as a reference and then purchase goods elsewhere. These people are unaware our prices are almost the same as the other stores plus we have products simply not available anywhere else."
Owner of the gluten free produce store, Georgina, says that about 60 people a week would go into the store, ask questions and then buy the same or similar product at a supermarket chain or online.
We would recommend to Georgina to create an online store since the store already has a website. Sell products online will save time, money and most likely trouble. She will work less hours, make less effort and still get paid.

The traditional way of shopping is certainly more ideal for small businesses like this but as a recent Google study found, almost 49% of people buy their goodies online while the rest of them prefer the traditional purchase way. This way chances of selling to those that purchase online and those that buy things directly from stores are higher!

Shocking Results from Facebook Users Behaviour Research

Recently, researchers have achieved something rather shocking.
Experts were able to accurately assume a Facebook user’s race, IQ, sexuality, substance use and political views using only their ‘likes’.

What came out from the research is that users on Facebook unintentionally reveal personal information including their sexual orientation, drug use and political beliefs.

Michal Kosinski, the lead Cambridge University analyst who worked with Microsoft Research on the study, has stated that “The important point is that, on one hand, it is good that people’s behaviour is predictable because it means Facebook can suggest very good stories on your news feed.”
“But what is shocking is that you can use the same data to predict your political views or your sexual orientation," he added.

Based on the 58,000 Facebook users behaviour, analysts were able to predict whether men were homosexual with 88% accuracy by their likes of Facebook pages, even if those users had not explicitly shared their sexuality on the site. Fewer than 5% of the homosexual participants in the study clicked obvious Likes, such as “Gay Marriage”.

Furthermore, the results are considered 75% accurate for predicting drug use among Facebook users, analyzing only public “like” updates. The findings will flare up concerns once again over how much companies and governments know about internet users through their online habits.

Online sites such as Facebook should be forced by regulation to inform users that deeply private information may be gleaned about them using the same technology that recommends films and music, he added.

The findings come shortly after Facebook announced a partnership with four of the world’s biggest data brokers aimed at improving targeted advertising on the site. The move means Facebook can target ads to its users based on their online and offline activity, including their location and high street shopping habits.

Facebook has not made any comments on the research findings yet.
