Germanwings launches bundled pricing

Passengers can now purchase bundled tickets including seat selection and checked luggage, at a 25 percent discount over buying the “extras” separately. The carrier has also introduced the option of buying adjacent empty seats.
The new pricing options mean customers can choose between Basic, Best and Flex fares, offering differing benefits. Basic, as the name would suggest, covers the basic cost of the flight, hand luggage up to 8kg, and miles within the carrier’s Boomerang Club loyalty scheme, while Best also includes one piece of checked luggage, advance seat selection, and an onboard snack and drink. Germanwings says that buying this bundled fare is 25 percent cheaper than purchasing the extras separately.
Flex fares include all of the benefits of the Best option, plus the ability to change your booking without charge (or cancel it for a €25 fee), plus checked luggage allowance up to five pieces, and double Boomerang Club miles.
Germanwings has also launched a “Private Seat” option, allowing passengers to purchase the seat next to them to ensure it stays free. This can be done at any time from the point of purchase up to three hours before departure, with customers being charged the current seat price on the day of booking, although the service “will not attract any additional booking or processing fees”.

Compare People on Facebook

The Truth About Facebook - Privacy Settings Every Facebook User Should Know, and Much More - The Facts You Should Know
Vulnerability: The Compare People application on Facebook sends user profile information, such as age, gender, city, ZIP code, favorite music, favorite movies, favorite TV shows, favorite books, “about me,” activities, interests, and political view to Google AdSense when displaying advertisements within the application.

Progress: Facebook has been notified. Compare People has commented; see below for updates.

More Detail: Today I was checking out my rankings in Compare People and decided to check for any security or privacy holes. While I haven’t actually hacked it (though I have some ideas), I was quite surprised to discover how much of my profile information is collected and sent to AdSense. From what I understand, this information is stored by Google, and thus this practice clearly violates Facebook’s TOS in that it...
  1. shares personal information with a third party without the user’s knowledge or consent and
  2. the third party stores information whose storages is restricted by the platform documentation.
The code for Compare People caches this information and information on a user’s friends, but does not appear to store any of the data long-term. I checked Compare People’s application page and off-Facebook documentation for a privacy policy and never found one, which could be another TOS violation.

Update: Thanks to Naval Ravikant from Compare People for replying and clarifying some things. First, according to Ravikant, Google does not store the profile fields like location, favorite movies, etc. and only uses them as keywords when generating the ads. Prior to posting I had researched this feature of AdSense, and best I could tell the info was stored. But as Ravikant pointed out, “personally identifiable information,” such as a user ID or name, is not passed on. Finally, Ravikant mentioned that many Facebook applications are employing the same techniques in generating their ads. I still don’t think transmitting such data to another application without notification or consent from the user would be consistent with the TOS, but Facebook will have to answer that question.

Compare People is disabling the feature until they get some clarification on whether it violates the TOS, and I appreciate their responsiveness. In any event, this once again reminds users how many ways data about them can be collected and used on the Internet, both with Facebook applications and Google AdSense.

Update 2: VentureBeat received word from Google that they have asked Facebook app developers not to send such information as keywords any more, has stopped using such keywords, and has not received any “personally identifiable information.”

BA strikes to go ahead amid anger at 'talks via TV'

The first in a series of five-day strikes by British Airways cabin crew is to go ahead tomorrow despite last-ditch attempts by the union to reach a resolution.
Tony Woodley, the joint leader of the Unite union, said the two sides had made "fantastic progress" during talks at the conciliation service Acas on Saturday, but he is believed to be furious after protesters from the Socialist Workers' party invaded the meeting, halting proceedings and prompting the police to be called.
Woodley described the incident as a "catastrophic" breakdown at a crucial stage in the talks, when he believed the two sides were close to a deal. Willie Walsh, BA's chief executive, also indicated that the two sides had "got close" to a resolution before the meeting collapsed.
Union insiders said they believed progress had been made over the 55 staff sacked or facing disciplinary action for their involvement in the dispute.
Although the union is believed to have held further discussions with BA by phone today, the airline said it had yet to comment on Woodley's offer, made in a television interview today, to halt the strike in return for the reinstatement of staff travel concessions – another key issue of the dispute. Walsh has previously indicated that he had gone as far as he could in offering a partial reinstatement of concessions.
Although BA said it is still "absolutely committed" to resolving the dispute, airline representatives are believed to be increasingly frustrated over union "to-ing and fro-ing" over whether it will negotiate. The first the airline heard of Woodley's offer was "live on the media", it said.
In a further indication of the frustration in communication between the airline and the union, Walsh accused Derek Simpson, the other joint leader of the union, of sending out live Twitter updates during Saturday's discussions, which Walsh said had undermined confidence.
Although both sides appear willing to talk, time is running out. The union said it intended to push ahead with the strike and two further five-day walkouts on 30 May and 5 June, threatening to disrupt the journeys of millions of passengers during the school half term.
The dispute continues as BA reported a record pre-tax profit loss of £531m last year – the worst figures since it was privatised in 1987. But Walsh said the airline wouldn't be grounded because of a small minority of people "who are clearly out of touch with reality". He said: "BA will survive and we will be stronger because we are tackling the core issues."
Last week BA managed to halt a strike due to start on 18 May after launching legal action over improper balloting of union members, but the court injunction was overturned following an appeal by Unite.
BA said it had put contingency plans in place and would be running 60% of its long-haul flights and around half of its short-haul flights from Heathrow during the strikes. Normal services will operate from Gatwick and London City airport.
A BA spokesman said: "We are disappointed that Tony Woodley has taken to negotiation through the media rather than through Acas. We had agreed to a request from Acas to meet this afternoon and are surprised that Unite did not take advantage of this."

Perpetual Traveller Comment
It appears that the Unite Union along with a number of its Cabin Crew members want to press the destruct button and bring down British Airways. They seem to have a death wish for BA or they are totally out of touch with the current financial climate and the present era of great difficulty for Airlines.
It is not likely that current wave of strikes will ground BA, however times are tough and there is little public sympathy for what the Union is doing. Just to refresh you all, as previously reported BA Cabin Crew already have the best wages and conditions in the UK, so its totally perplexing why they are so determined to strike and cause such massive loss and disruption for BA and the poor BA passengers.
Clearly Perpetual Travellers, if the Ash Cloud from Iceland does not get you, the BA Cabin Crew will!

Essential Tips to maintain your Personal Privacy on the go

Understanding Privacy
The origins of our Perpetual Traveller Overseas Blog derive from the original Perpetual Traveller or PT concept created by W.G. Hill (a pen name) who wrote the infamous "5 Flags Theory" which advocates a system for truly international orientated people to organise different facets of their lives to fall under the jurisdiction of a number of countries otherwise known as flags. The fundamental [urpose of this theory was to minimize governmental interference (either from taxes or otherwise) or to maximize privacy of the individual.More about the "5 Flag Theory" in the future, however this particular article focuses on the aspect of privacy.

Since the birth of the Perpetual Traveller concept we have endured the dark era of Bush and Blair, which brought the "War on Terrorism" that was manipulated as the ultimate excuse to decrease civil liberty and individual privacy in many parts of the western world. Strangely it was the last bastion of freedom itself "The Internet" that has actually eroded ones personal privacy in many respects, more than any other factor, which is due to nothing more than than the Social Media revolution.

At the point of dispair there is suddenly a glimmer of light, following the credit crunch and a change of politics with the recent emergence of Obama, Cameron and Clegg in the Political arena of the US and UK at least. There are encouraging signs of respect of individual privacy coming from the UK in particular, however if you are a decent individual living in the western world at this moment in time and you are concerned about your privacy, here are some essential tips...

1. Do not sign up to Facebook.
This social media giant simply does not respect individual privacy. They make it by design hard to delete an account and all of your information is left wide open. If you insist on maintaining an account we advise you not to publish your address and personal details. The trouble with the Internet is that when you publish something it stays with you for life, so we suggest caution when signing up to social media accounts and in particular to be careful with Facebook.

To check what information is currently already published for the world to see on the Internet about you, go to http://www.123people.com/ you may be surprised what information has been accumulated about you online!

2. Be aware of identity freud
This is possibibly the fastest growing crime of all in the western world and you can trust few with your private details, especially documents, bank accounts, credit card details and the like. If you use a credit card to make payments online, dedicate one particular card to this function and use it exclusively for the Internet and check statements and payments carefully. For all other transactions made for physical commercial, we suggest a CHIP and PIN facility and never be tempted to utilise this credit card for the Internet. Some banks offer a service whereby everytime you use your credit card a text message is sent to your mobile phone seconds aftet he purchase is confirmed. This service offers peace of mind, because one knows that no freudulant charges can be made without you instantly receiving a text message. Recently I lost my Credit card somewhere in the house and I simply could not find it for days! Although I started to think the worst as I traced all recent movements, the fact that I received no text messages of purchases was a great source of comfort and I was encouraged to seek a little harder, Eventually I found my credit card in the scanner of all places, but at all times I was safe in the knowledge my credit card has not been used, due to this magnificent text service.

3. Create an alias or maildrop and be careful who you give your information to
When travelling to Hotels, renting cars or in similar circumstances, where you are expected to complete a long form with all your personal details, it may be wise to use a different address (even PO Box or mail drop) and details, in particular information that does not match your credit card or documents, especially if you are in South America or certain parts of Asia. If you would like a worldwide maildrop in Cyprus contact info@progresshq.com

In fact you should be very careful who you give your information to in all circumstances, as very few can be trusted and that includes Governments (UK Government recetly lost thousands of private confidential details), banks (the banking crisis have proved again that baks can be trusted only sparingly) and companies.

4. Surf the Web on the go Safely and Securely
In the age of 2010 everything happens online. In short we bank, shop, date, share information, meet friends, work, read news, books holidays and practically everything has an app or website dedicated to it. Your Privacy is very much insecure and besides the viruses, worms, malware, key loggers and the like you are exposed to all kinds of Privacy risks. It seems that every Company wants you habits and information and through cookies, a history trace etc you are providing them with everything they need to target you in the future.

Here are some tricks to surf more privately and securely through a browser....

Using Firefox: Go to TOOLS and then click "Start Private Browsing.

Using Chrome: Go to FILE and then click "New Incognito Window".

Using Safari: Go to SAFARI then click "Private Browsing".

At Perpetual Traveller Overseas, we do not recommend using Windows Explorer.

If you want to be more secure still, go to this website: http://proxify.co.uk/.

Essentially Proxify® is a web-based anonymous proxy service which allows anyone to surf the Web privately and securely. Unlike other proxies, there is no software to install or complicated instructions to follow. Just enter a URL (website address) in the form above. Through Proxify, you can use websites but they cannot uniquely identify or track you. Proxify hides your IP address and our encrypted connection prevents monitoring of your network traffic. Once using Proxify, you can surf normally and forget that it is there, protecting you.

5. Use Passwords everywhere
Use a password lock on the phone you travel with. Most Smart Phones possess a Safe feature, whereby you can enter one master password and retrieve all others from this one application.

Password protect your Laptop and Password protect all of your sensitive files. Consider using Password programs to manage all of your Passwords like "One Password" or "Last Pass". The latter works in the Firefox and Chrome browsers and is free. PHP encryption software could also be useful for sensitive information.

The above is our first overview of Privacy Tips for PT's. More of the same will follow in forthcoming articles, so keep an eye on the PT Privacy label.

One-day strike disrupts Athens

A nationwide strike by public-sector workers in Greece has caused serious disruption to travellers and bank customers.
The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE), the country's biggest labor grouping with about 1m members, called the strike as a protest against a draft tax bill which it says infringes workers' rights.
The bill would reduce unions' role in the running of state-owned firms.
Unionists claimed the strike was an overwhelming success and said they would consider another next week.
"If the government wants a break with the unions, then it shall have it," GSEE president Christos Polyzogopoulos was quoted as saying.
During the 24-hour walkout all public transport was closed, most Olympic Airways flights were grounded and post offices, state television and state banks shut down.
Commuter traffic in Athens was thrown into chaos with journeys taking more than twice the usual time.
Rioting over harsh austerity measures left three people dead in a torched Athens bank and clouds of tear gas drifting past parliament, in an outburst of anger that underlined the long and difficult struggle Greece faces to stick with painful cutbacks that come with an international bailout.
The deaths were the first during a protest in Greece in nearly 20 years.
Fear that the bailout won't stop the debt crisis from spreading to other financially troubled EU countries like Portugal and Spain intensified amid the violence Wednesday, as credit ratings agency Moody's put Portugal on watch for a possible downgrade.
In Brussels, EU officials desperately tried to calm market fears that Greece's debt crisis was spreading, insisting it was a "unique case" combining profligacy and tampered accounts. EU President Herman Van Rompuy insisted the growing debt problems in Spain and Portugal had "absolutely nothing to do with the situation in Greece."
"Greece is a unique and particular case in the EU" because of its "precarious debt dynamics" and because it "has cheated with its statistics for years and years," EU Commissioner Olli Rehn said.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel urged lawmakers on Wednesday to speedily approve their country's share of the loans to Greece. As Europe's largest economy, Germany will provide euro8.4 billion ($10.8 billion) in 2010 and up to euro14 billion ($18.1 billion) more over 2011 and 2012, according to the plan.
"Nothing less than the future of Europe, and with that the future of Germany in Europe, is at stake," Merkel told lawmakers. "We are at a fork in the road."
Merkel's government had insisted that Greece agree to new austerity measures before Germany committed to financial assistance — a stance that drew criticism of foot-dragging. Merkel had appeared to want to delay action until after a local vote in Germany this Sunday, but ratings agency Standard and Poor downgraded Greek bonds to junk status last week, deepening the crisis.
The shocks from Greece have shaken world markets and raised questions about whether the rally in stocks since they hit bottom in March 2009 can continue.
David Joy, chief market strategist for Columbia Management, a U.S. manager of $341 billion in stocks, bonds, cash and other investments, warned against complacency over the U.S. economic recovery and said this week's events in Greece and Europe "should serve as a reminder that the ramifications of the financial crisis are still being felt."
"Most of these lingering problems relate to the fact that excessive amounts of debt have been accumulated prior to the financial crisis. It's going to take time for these to be worked through," he said.
The outcome is a flight to safety, in which the dollar rises and money leaves riskier and economically more sensitive assets such as stocks and commodities.
Even with the bailout, some economists think Greece could eventually default on or restructure its debts because economic growth is expected to be poor over the next several years, hurting government revenue. Some also fear the austerity measures insisted upon by the EU and IMF could make prospects for growth even worse in the name of paying down debt.
The new austerity measures are to be voted on in Parliament Thursday. The Socialists hold a comfortable majority and the bill is expected to pass.
